The COVID-19 pandemic brought about many changes in family routines and introduced new stressors for parents. While stressors can lead to parental burnout, coparenting support may mitigate the effects of parental stress on parental burnout. The current study explored the effects of parental stress, COVID-19 stress, and coparenting support on parental burnout during the second year of the pandemic. Participants consisted of one hundred fifty-five parents in the USA (M = 39.6, SD = 7.38;female = 94.8%). Results suggested parental stress was positively associated with parental burnout while coparenting support was negatively associated with parental burnout. These findings highlight the importance of addressing parental stress and support to minimize the risk of parental burnout. Children's engagement with the internet has exploded. From education to social media, companies have offered products and services that-far from being mere distractions for children-have increasingly become necessities. These necessities are most keenly felt in the EdTech world. As companies in the United States rely on the verifiable parental consent required by the Children 's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) to collect and use minors' data, reviewing boilerplate waivers of liability and consent forms for children's online activities has thus become part of parenting. This piece argues that under the common law tradition of protecting the best interests of the child, when it comes to protecting children's digital privacy, relying solely on parental consent is insufficient and ill-suited. This work compares parental consent forms for children's online activities to parental waivers for tort liability for physical injuries suffered by children. In the latter, courts have not reached a consensus on whether such contracts are enforceable or altogether void. However, most courts have struck down such waivers as against public policy in commercial settings. By relying on courts ' decisions regarding the role of parents in protecting the best interests of the child when faced with a child's physical injury, this piece argues that public policy should have to force to override parental consent as it pertains to the protection of a minor's digital privacy and their use of EdTech tools. It thus encourages lawmakers at the federal and state levels to move away from a parental consent apparatus and instead put forward new measures for the protection of children's digital privacy. It further illustrates that, despite COPPA, common law privacy torts are not fully preempted. Adopting the approach proposed in this work will also motivate companies to be more vigilant towards handling minors' data to avoid potential lawsuits. It will further encourage a market for competition between socially responsible companies that would prioritize children's privacy over an endless list of corporate interests.

Alternate :Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly spread throughout the whole world and negatively affected individuals' participation in physical activity. In this context, the purpose of the research is to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the participation in physical activity of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from the perspective of their parents. Method: Ten parents (6 mothers and 4 fathers) with children diagnosed with ASD constituted the sample group for the research designed by the phenomenological qualitative research method. A semi-structured interview form and a personal information form were used as data collection tools. The data analysis was performed using the content analysis method. Findings: In the direction of the findings obtained from the research, four inclusive themes were determined. These are a) the effects of the pandemic on life;b) the difficulties encountered during the period of the pandemic;c) the necessity of physical activity;and d) the changing events. Under these themes, there are 12 sub-themes in total. Discussion: The parents expressed that the practices performed for the sake of decreasing the propagation rate of the virus had negatively affected especially the education, parent relationships, and active lifestyles of children with ASD. According to the parents, the physical activity habits of children with ASD significantly changed, and usually, home-based events were performed during the restrictions. The parents specified that they had understood how extremely important the participation in physical activity of children with ASD was during the period of the pandemic.

The LEARN-COVID pilot study collected data on infants and their parents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Assessments took place between April and July 2021. Parents (N = 357) from Switzerland (predominantly), Germany, and Austria answered a baseline questionnaire on their behaviour related to the pandemic, social support, infant nutrition, and infant regulation. Subsequently, parents (n = 222) answered a 10- day evening diary on infant nutrition, infant regulation, parental mood, and parental soothing behaviour. Data and documentation are stored on Zenodo, https://doi. org/10.5281/zenodo.6946048. These data may be valuable to researchers interested in infant development and parenting during the pandemic as well as to researchers interested in daily variability in infant behaviour, parenting, and nutrition. Parental involvement has long been an area of research across the world and is consistently found to have a positive effect on students' academic performance. The global spread of COVID-19 pandemic, however, has caused disruptions in education systems worldwide including the Philippines, therefore, online education was implemented. During online distance learning, parents' role in supervising their children's education was reinforced and appeared to be crucial for some parents. The study used a sample of 49 parents of Grade 12 students at Lala National High School for the academic year 2022-2023. Results indicate a high level of parental involvement in terms of parenting, learning at home, decision making and familiarity with school information. The respondents also showed an outstanding performance during the course of the utilization of the online learning modalities. The study therefore concluded a positive correlation between parental involvement and the academic performance of students.

Stress among parents has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research prior to the pandemic indicates that parents of children who struggle with emotion regulation (ER) and who themselves are less mindful report more stress and diminished coping abilities. We know little, however, about these associations in the context of COVID-19. To prevent COVID-related deteriorations in parent well-being and child outcomes and to support parents during this potentially challenging time, it is important to understand the factors that are associated with increased stress as well as adaptive coping. This paper discusses the association between children's ER, mindful parenting (MP), parent stress, and parents' coping with parenting during the pandemic in a sample of 217 caregivers of school-aged children (91.0% mothers). Results indicated that children's ER was associated with parents' self-reported coping with parenting in the pandemic but was not associated with increased stress. Further, MP moderated the association between children's ER and coping, such that parents who were the most mindful and had children with better ER skills reported significantly greater ability to cope with pandemic parenting. Coping was lower for other combinations of ER and mindful parenting. These findings contradict those from before COVID, suggesting the relationship between children's ER and parent outcomes may differ in the COVID-19 context, and offering insights into which parents may be most likely to struggle with coping with pandemic parenting. The paper presents and discusses data from a qualitative study carried out in April and May 2020 with families under lockdown in Italy (N = 319) and Greece (N = 297). The research examined how confinement and restrictions on movement had impacted families' everyday geographies (with a particular focus on ‘liminal' places located between homes and public spaces, such as balconies, hallways, courtyards, backyards), as well as parents' most valued public spaces and propensity (and modes) to use them. Data were analysed following a top-down thematic approach. The results suggest that restricted access to public spaces (as enforced during the Greek and Italian lockdowns) may influence the signification of domestic places, prompt remodulation of the dialectic between public and private spheres, and bring to light the social value of families' (parents and children's) experiences in public spaces.

"Kawasaki was an icon in the paediatric world,” Jane Burns, professor and director of the Kawasaki Disease Research Centre at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, told The BMJ. In 1949 he became a staff paediatrician at the Red Cross Hospital outside Tokyo and began to undertake research. ” "Ten years after starting at the Japanese Red Cross Central Hospital (now the Japanese Red Cross Medical Centre) in Tokyo, I examined on 5 January 1961 a boy aged four years and three months with a curious clinical symptom complex I had never seen,” he explained.3 "The patient had a high fever of about two weeks' duration, marked bilateral conjunctival hyperaemia without discharge, reddening dry fissured lips, diffuse redness of the mucous membrane of oral cavity, strawberry like tongue, left non-purulent cervical adenopathy, polymorphous erythema on the body, and marked redness of palms and soles, with indurative oedema of hands and feet following desquamation from the fingertips.”

"5 However, more recent findings, such as the presentation of joint swelling without EM in Black children, are the result of research efforts to identify differences among racial and ethnic groups in presentations of disease symptoms, with the aim of greater diagnostic accuracy and reduced health care disparities.4 Treatment of Lyme disease Although most resources, such as the CDC's website,1 published articles and sites,2,3 and the Red Book,5 recommend that pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients with Lyme disease receive an antibiotic, such as doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime (for penicillin-allergic patients), these publications differ in recommended dosage and duration of treatment. [...]PHCPs who are unfamiliar with antibiotic treatments for Lyme disease should consult with infectious disease specialists. Children who have evidence of Lyme carditis, Lyme arthritis, cranial neuritis, Lyme meningitis, or radiculoneuritis should immediately be referred to infectious disease and the appropriate pediatric specialists.2 Respiratory infections and health care inequities Although researchers have reported studies on racial and ethnic inequities among children related to respiratory diseases over the last 20 years, few randomized controlled trials have scientifically investigated the problem or have identified and rigorously investigated evidencebased interventions. The COVID-19 pandemic brought a new focus in pediatric health care on the inequities experienced by Black, Hispanic, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander children living in poverty, who regularly experience a disproportionate number of respirator y illnesses and infections.6 Several studies have shown increased hospitalization rates for Blac k and H ispan ic children who contracted COVID-19.6 One team of researchers studying children from birth to 4 years old reported a hospitalization rate of 55% for Black and Hispanic children.7 For years, PHCPs have observed and treated children for asthma in all health care settings. Bhavnani et al reported that Black children had a 7-fold higher rate of emergency department visits compared with White children in 2019, 1 year before the pandemic began.8 However, the difference decreased to a 2-fold increase for Black children compared with White children in 2020, when COVID-19 measures such as masking, social distancing, and school closures were in place.8 Researchers are continuing to investigate why Black and Hispanic children are more vulnerable to upper respiratory infections with viruses such as influenza, rhinovirus, and adenovirus.8 Summertime prevention of respiratory infections Talking about prevention strategies with families is the first step toward reducing asthma episodes and exacerbations.

This study aimed to examine the views of parents of young children on their children's use of technology during COVID-19. The participants of this research, in which a case study was used, consisted of 10 mothers and 10 fathers living in a province in the inner Aegean region of Turkey. The interview form prepared by the researcher was used as a data collection tool. The data obtained from this research were analysed using content analysis. The research data were gathered under the following four themes: family guidance, technology use in the family, effects on the development of the child, and technology education. The findings showed that parents had positive opinions about the use of technological tools and technology education during COVID-19. In addition, it was concluded that parents needed support on how to guide their children in this process. It was determined that while some parents tried to be positive models for their children, they showed different approaches with their spouses. To them, technolog) affected their children's behavior and attention/interest levels negatively.

The death of a loved one represents one of the most distressing and potentially traumatic life events in childhood and adolescence. Grief reactions in youth are influenced by ongoing developmental processes and manifest differently depending on the child's age and developmental stage. These grief-related processes unfold within youths' caregiving context, as children and adolescents rely heavily on the adults in their environment to navigate and cope with the death of a loved one. Despite the field's increasing recognition of the potential for maladaptive grief reactions to impede functioning over time, few longitudinal research studies on childhood grief currently exist. In this article, we will (a) provide a brief overview of the childhood bereavement literature; (b) review the new DSM-5 and ICD-11 Prolonged Grief Disorder diagnostic criteria through a developmentally-informed lens; (c) describe how grief reactions manifest in children and adolescents of different ages through the lenses of multidimensional grief theory and relational developmental systems theory; (d) highlight key moderating factors that may influence grief in youth, and (e) discuss a primary moderating factor, the caregiving environment, and the potential mechanisms through which caregivers influence children's grief.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the perspectives of parents during the perinatal period amid the COVID-19 pandemic and explore the experiences of Singaporean parents receiving perinatal support via the Supportive Parenting App (SPA). BACKGROUND: The stressors accompanying parenting responsibilities often affect the overall well-being of the family unit. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, Singaporean parents are forced to shoulder childcare responsibilities with minimal support due to safety restrictions. The Supportive Parenting Application (SPA) was introduced to parents during the start of the pandemic to offer timely additional support. It is a mobile health application-based educational support for parents across the perinatal period, consisting of features such as peer support, expert advice and discussion forums. DESIGN: Descriptive qualitative study. METHODS: Semi-structured one-to-one interviews were conducted with 33 parents (16 from the control group, 17 from the intervention group) in an ongoing randomised controlled trial between June 2021 and February 2022. The COREQ checklist was used to guide the reporting of the data. RESULTS: Four themes with 10 subthemes describing the perinatal experiences of parents were identified. The themes include 'Ups and downs' of parenting experiences; Perinatal care from 'best care' to 'flying blind'; What kept couples going and Use of technology-a way forward. CONCLUSION: Although COVID-19 negatively affected parents' availability of care and support, most could still access other support sources to help them. Additionally, the SPA was found to be a dependable information source for the intervention group parents. Future research could work on improving technology-based support based on the feedback given to offer better quality perinatal care for parents. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Technology-based support provided by healthcare professionals helps provide reliable perinatal information and support for parents. More efforts should be directed towards developing quality informational resources and support to improve perinatal care. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Patients/members of the public contributed to the data collected and were involved in member checking to ensure the rigour of the study. The COVID-19 pandemic was a source of significant stress due to health and safety concerns and measures to control the virus' spread, such as mobility restrictions. This measure was especially demanding for parents with school aged children, who had to find new work-family balance as their children participate in online education while attempting to work remotely. To evaluate parents' stress trajectories during the pandemic, we conducted Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMAs) during lockdown for 29 days in 68 families in Santiago, Chile. In addition, we evaluated the role of educational level and income, co-parenting, and number of children in parents' stress trajectories. Our results showed that during the first weeks of lockdown expected protective factors (i.e., income and co-parental support) were not able to influence parents' daily stress management. Moreover, parents with higher educational levels reported worse stress adaptation than less educated parents. On the other hand, co-parental conflict was significantly associated with parent's stress. Our study captured an acute response to COVID-19 related challenges. This study contributes to understanding how parents adjust to stress during adverse circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Healthcare workers have been under tremendous psychosocial strain since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly those on the frontline such as nurses. This is especially true in low and middle-income countries such as South Africa, where lack of resources and support exacerbate challenges. Five focus group discussions were conducted with frontline nurses at primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare institutions in Cape Town, South Africa. Participants reported significant stress emanating from all spheres of their life, with the acute stressors of their work having largely adverse consequences on their lives in their homes and communities. A lack of organisational support was evident, with participants highlighting various ways in which the psychosocial strain they were under may be alleviated. Healthcare facilities should investigate both individual and organisational interventions aimed at better supporting their invaluable frontline teams. These include tailored psychological support services, sufficient time for rest, adequate staffing and medical supplies, effective leadership, COVID-19 specific training, and the promotion of teamwork. However, facilities should also extend their concern to the families of staff by reducing potential risk of exposure through a variety of measures including providing transport and voluntary isolation accommodation. Such interventions are important not only for the healthcare workers and their families, but also for the smooth functioning of healthcare institutions as the pandemic draws on into an uncertain future.

Using interviews with 15 Australian fathers, we explored the impact of having spent time in COVID-19 lockdown on men's views of their relationship with their children and family-work life balance. All interviewees were married to women and living with their children, most were employed and working full-time. Three themes were identified from the interviews: an ongoing desire to be present as a father, benefits to being present through COVID-19 lockdowns for self as a father and for the children, and conflicting pressures from workplaces and at home which were barriers to being present. Survey data 1 year later revealed that many of these fathers had shifted their work patterns because of their lockdown experience. Shifts in workplace culture and behavior were identified as supporting flexible working arrangements. Despite the immediate challenges of lockdown, it provided the opportunity for some fathers to reevaluate their priorities resulting in long-term changes in working patterns.

[...]many elementary and secondary schools were closed in 2020;when they reopened in 2021, masks and social distancing were in place. [...]these factors may have significantly reduced children and unvaccinated families from contracting and spreading the measles virus. Pediatric tuberculosis A diagnosis of pediatric tuberculosis (TB), for either latent TB (referred to as tuberculosis infection [TBI]7) or TB disease (active TB), is made for patients aged less than 15 years who have either a positive tuberculin skin test or a positive interferongamma release assay.7,8 Both tests have a high positive predictive value when used for children who have had a direct contact exposure to an adult with TB disease.7 Infants and young children are at increased risk of developing life-threatening forms of the disease, including TB meningitis and disseminated TB, compared with older children and adults.8 The greatest numbers of TB cases occur in children under 5 years old, with 38% of pediatric cases occurring within this age range.7 In addition, in 2020, 28% of the 10- to 14-year-old population had a diagnosis of pediatric TB.8 Data from TB cases in children aged less than 18 years living in the United States from 2010 to 2017 revealed that 32% of children with TB disease were born in other countries.9 Adults who have the TB bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, spread the organism via airborne transmission by coughing, speaking, or singing. [...]children with pediatric TB do not spread the organism as readily as adults, because pediatric TB is less infectious than the adult form.8 Children may present with a cough, weakness, weight loss, fever, change in playtime behaviors, and/or night sweats.8 Children younger than 4 years are at the highest riskof progressing from TBI to TB disease, with data showing a risk of 40% to 50% for infants less than 1 year old and 25% for 1- to 2-year-olds.8 However, children with a diagnosis of TBI who receive drug therapy and whose parents adhere to the regimen have a 90% reduced risk of developing TB disease.8 Adolescents older than 12 years have a risk of progression to adult-type TB disease. Providers need to be aware that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend the 4-month rifapentine-moxifloxacin TB regimen for children younger than 12 years.8 Best practices for pediatric providers include consulting a TB expert prior to beginning the treatment course, based on the available data showing that young children have a high risk of developing life-threatening TB disease.8 Conclusions Pediatric health care providers are on the frontlines for identifying infectious diseases and, to prevent poor outcomes, must react quickly to diagnose and treat cases in children and adolescents.

Using an intersectional approach, we explore how parents in the Czech Republic coped with the increased demands of childcare and how their perceptions of childcare changed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on Nancy Fraser's theory of the social contradiction of capitalism, we address the question of whether the pandemic situation can be viewed as an opportunity to increase recognition of care. Qualitative interviews with parents from various socioeconomic backgrounds conducted from spring 2020 to summer 2021 demonstrate ambivalent experiences of care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first school closure in spring 2020 was perceived as a rather positive interruption to everyday affairs. As the pandemic became protracted, the long-term negative effects of care under lockdown arose, especially among mothers, which included weakening labour market position, deteriorating economic situation, and growing dependence on a male breadwinner or social welfare. Our research shows the temporality of the COVID-19 care crisis. In the first stage of the pandemic, care was (also) assessed as an opportunity, a source of purpose, and a new value. In the next period, the experiences and expectations were rather negative. Over time, gender inequality at home increased as women took on most of the increased care burden and the social inequalities deepened, with some using their resources to compensate for the risks associated with the care crisis and others facing further exhaustion and income losses. Overall, parental care did not win greater societal recognition during the pandemic. © The Author(s) 2023.

Just as traumatic or stressful events and experiences can increase the risk, strong and supportive relationships and institutions can offset or mitigate that risk. [...]if mental health conditions do develop, early and ongoing recognition and treatment can decrease associated morbidity.2 4 The 2019-2020 National Survey of Children's Health showed that 23% of children aged 3 to 17 years have a reported mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral (MEDB) problem, with prevalence unevenly distributed by geographic area and social determinants of health: Beginning in April 2020, the proportion of mental health-related visits in pediatric emergency departments increased significantly for both children and adolescents.8 A 2021 report from the Child Mind Institute, "The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Children's Mental Health: What We Know So Far," highlights the disproportionate negative impact on vulnerable children: those with preexisting mental health problems, especially those with limited access to treatment, racial minorities experiencing racism in the health care system and beyond, LGBTQ+ children, and families living with economic uncertainty or food insecurity.4 Skill-building resources To mitigate the level of need that has created the current crisis, it is particularly important that emerging mental health symptoms be recognized and addressed early within the pediatric medical home before they escalate to the level of crisis. [...]the AAP has developed a mental health toolkit for pediatricians that includes materials, real- world cases, tools for screening, video examples of skills, and an algorithm serving as a cognitive map for how to approach mental health concerns in an outpatient office setting.9 Another resource, The REACH Institute, offers live and online evidence-based training courses for pediatricians on identification and treatment of mental health issues, including screening, medication management, cognitive behavioral therapy, and a host of other topics, all patient-centered and designed to be feasible in an outpatient office setting.10 (For more on The REACH Institute and pediatrician training, see "Guiding principles in managing pediatric mental health issues," page 18.) Address the economic and social barriers that contribute to poor mental health foryoung people, families, and caregivers. 6 Increase timely data collection and research to identify and respond to youth mental health needs more rapidly.
